With approximately 170 different species within the Banksia family, all but one variety are native to Australia. A truly unqiue and intruiging plant and flower which can be found in many different forms and sizes within the species. While most are shrub like in size and shape, some varieties can grow into giant trees exceeding 95 feet. Most Banksia plants prefer a well drained sandy and gravel based soil, as they can't tolerate wet or soggy roots. They also prefer a full sun exposure to ensure the fullest potential of it's flowers.
Once in bloom, the flowers are prolific creators of nectar which attract numerous wildlife such as birds, sugar gliders, insects and other nectar hungry animals. After blooming has finished, the Banskia flower will create a cone like feature which holds it's seeds ready to disperse and thrive. Intersteringly, most Banskia cones will only open after intense heat most likely from wildfires. Once established, the Banksia is long lived, and the plant will thrive with little attention or care. It's no surprise, its flowers are prized around the world as they make great cut flowers and an intruguing element to any bouquets or arrangements they are placed in. Available in our fresh offerings when seasonally available, and year round in our artificial line up.
Either way you choose, the Banksia makes a great addition to your home and is only limited by your creativity.
