The Foxtail Lily is a truly impressive flower in the garden. Known for its incredible height—some varieties reaching up to 8 feet—this striking plant also boasts a sweet fragrance that attracts pollinators, while its tightly packed buds explode into numerous star-shaped flowers. Foxtail Lilies bloom from late spring to early summer, filling your garden with vibrant colour for approximately 3-4 weeks. After blooming, it’s recommended to remove the stalks to prevent overseding.
Once established, Foxtail Lilies are quite resilient and will return year after year with their stunning flowers, provided you meet their preferred growing conditions. While they can tolerate some shade, full sun is ideal for the strongest flowering display. Their soil requirements are especially critical—Foxtail Lilies must be grown in well-draining soil, as wet, soggy roots will cause them to rot. When planting, add sand or grit underneath the tubers to help with drainage and to protect the roots from excess moisture. Ensure the crown of the plant remains above the soil surface and, when planting multiple tubers, allow enough space for them to grow and spread. Foxtail Lilies do not like to be overcrowded and do not tolerate frequent transplanting, so plant them once and leave them undisturbed.
Given their impressive height, the flowering stalks may need protection from high winds or storms to prevent snapping. Planting against fences or other wind barriers is highly beneficial. Tubers are best planted in the fall, but make sure to protect them from extreme cold during the winter months.
Available as tubers when in season and year-round in our artificial selection, the Foxtail Lily offers colour, height, and beauty that will not disappoint.
