Hellebores are early-flowering perennials, often among the first to bloom in the garden. Once in full bloom, their flowers can last 8-10 weeks—an impressive duration for such an early bloomer. Once they finish blooming, it's best to remove the flowers to encourage fresh growth.
Although the plant is toxic to both humans and pets, the flowers that grace its stems are both intriguing and beautiful. Hellebores thrive in shaded locations during the warmer months and prefer some sunlight during the winter. The ideal spot for them is beneath a deciduous tree, where they can receive the best of both worlds.
In colder climates, they may require protection from extreme temperatures, as their delicate leaves can be susceptible to damage. They prefer moist but well-draining soil and, once established, can tolerate drier spells. Hellebores are relatively easy to grow and make perfect plants for a “plant and forget” gardening approach. Though they require basic maintenance and protection from the elements, once established, they can thrive for 20 years or more.
