Fortunately, the Lilac is a resilient shrub, making it easy to grow in the garden — one of the reasons it’s so popular. With minimal requirements to thrive, it’s perfect for gardeners who prefer low-maintenance plants.
For optimal blooms, plant Lilacs in a full sun location with well-draining soil. While Lilacs can tolerate occasional drought, they do not fare well with wet, soggy roots. A slightly acidic soil is ideal, and a regular application of fertilizer will help ensure the plant’s health. Lilacs also thrive with plenty of air circulation to prevent disease and encourage healthy growth.
Once blooming has finished, Lilacs benefit from regular pruning to remove dead branches and promote air flow. Depending on the variety, they typically bloom for 3-4 weeks, with some varieties offering a second round of flowers later in the summer. Keep in mind that Lilacs bloom on the previous year's growth, so avoid pruning new shoots to ensure the maximum number of blooms for the following year.
