The Pitcher Plant is a truly unique and fascinating member of the plant world. While 18 different varieties can be found across Canada, the broader species are distributed globally — from Asia and Madagascar to Australia and other diverse, ecologically rich regions. This remarkable plant is also the official Provincial Flower of Newfoundland and Labrador, admired for its distinctive features that place it among the carnivorous plant family.
With its striking appearance and specialized structure, the Pitcher Plant lures its prey — primarily insects — using a sweet-smelling nectar secreted along the rim of its tubular “pitcher.” As insects approach and step onto the slippery edge, they often lose their footing and fall into the cup-shaped cavity below. Inside, downward-pointing hairs prevent their escape, and the fluid at the bottom, filled with digestive enzymes, begins to break down the unfortunate prey almost immediately. Fascinating — though certainly less so for the insect.
Because the Pitcher Plant derives most of its nutrients from its prey, it thrives in nutrient-poor soils. In Canada, it is typically found in bogs and other similar wetland environments.
When grown indoors, most Pitcher Plants are of the tropical variety and can do quite well in the home, provided they’re placed in a bright space with indirect sunlight. Use a well-draining, soilless medium such as sphagnum moss, and ensure proper nutrition either through feeding insects or using a suitable fertiliser. Always water with distilled or reverse osmosis (RO) water, as tap water often contains minerals and chemicals that can harm the plant.
