Protea

The Protea is an amazing and unusual-looking flower that adds an exotic touch to any arrangement it’s placed in. With over a thousand different varieties — ranging from small shrubs to towering trees and everything in between — these stunning plants never fail to impress.

Proteas thrive in full sun and absolutely relish the heat. The more sun they receive, the more blooms they produce. Interestingly, they flourish in conditions where many other plants struggle. However, while they love the heat, they don’t tolerate humidity well, making dry, warm environments best suited to their needs. They also prefer well-draining soil and benefit from good air circulation.

Although they’re not commonly found in North American gardens due to climate limitations, Proteas are often available as cut flowers in bouquets and floral arrangements. They have an excellent vase life, lasting anywhere from 1 to 2 weeks with proper care.

Interesting fact: The King Protea is the national flower of South Africa — and for good reason. Its massive bloom and dramatic structure make it a truly show-stopping flower.

Proteas are available year-round in our artificial offerings, and in our fresh-cut selections when seasonally available. If you ever get the chance to bring one of these unusual and stunning flowers into your home or office, you won’t be disappointed!
