The tulip is one of those classic flowers that virtually everyone recognises—even if you don’t have a green thumb! A true symbol of spring, tulips come in more varieties and colours than one can count. Their flower shapes range from the traditional cup form to more exotic and interesting designs. Tulips are fairly simple to grow, and many varieties are virtually care-free once established. They thrive in sunny locations with well-draining soil. Planting tulips under deciduous trees works perfectly, as tulips bloom before the trees fully leaf out.
Tulip bulbs should be planted in the fall, as they require a cold winter period to prepare for their stunning spring flowers. For easier planting, use a bulb planter or dig a hole 6–8 inches deep with the pointy end of the bulb facing upward. Cover with soil and patiently wait until spring to enjoy the fruits of your labour! Tulips are not only beautiful in the garden but also make excellent cut flowers, bringing some of spring’s best blooms indoors.
Interesting fact: Although many associate tulips with the Netherlands—the world’s largest producer—their natural range actually originates in Turkey and Central Asia!
